Hans Johrend

I’m a mechatronics engineer and researcher from Cluj-Napoca, passionate about the intersection of applied physics and manufacturing. I’m pursuing a Master’s in Solid State Physics at Babeș–Bolyai University, where my thesis focuses on a maskless photolithography stepper for micro-scale IC prototyping — a project bridging optics, microfabrication, and automation.

My experience spans private research, product development, and quality assurance — from robotics research to assistive wearable technology at dotLumen, a startup creating mobility solutions for the visually impaired. I specialize in hardware design, embedded systems, and manufacturing, with a strong background in CAD/CAE/CAM and prototyping.

I’m also active in the local STEM community, mentoring hackathon teams and supporting student associations through technical guidance and outreach.

Research

I’m deeply interested in manufacturing technologies, materials, electronics, and integrated circuits. My current academic work focuses on developing a workflow and toolset for a low-cost integrated circuit prototyping fab, aiming to make microfabrication more accessible and flexible. I’m also a strong advocate for open hardware and the collaborative innovation it enables.

While I’m involved in various technical and creative projects, this website currently highlights my academic research.
